How Is a Custom Wig Made?

Making a custom wig is often a long and drawn out process that has many steps. It takes many hours, starting with the initial consultation with the client to the final styling, in order to create a lifelike wig. There are however, machine made wigs, which are made from synthetic materials, but the most natural looking ones are custom made by hand for specific individuals.

As mentioned the process starts with a consultation between the wig maker and the client. Once the consultant understands what the client is looking for in a wig, they will then wrap the client’s head to create a mold. They will use this to create a pattern for the base of the wig. The mold is put on a head form, traced, and then covered with a fine net. This netting will be then cut to form the base to attach the wigs hair.

After the mold and base have been made, the consultant will then choose the hair for the wig. Usually, the hair will be much longer than needed, this is to allow for styling. The wig store maker can use either synthetic, natural, or a blend of both hair types to create a wig which flows naturally and is simple to maintain. Different colors of hair could be used, in order to create attractive highlights.

When the wig maker has blended all the hair into a mixture of texture and color, the hair will then be laid on holding cards. These have dozens of pins that will grip the hair. They will then start to pull stands or individual hairs and knot them onto the wig base.

Making a wig is a slow and extremely laborious process. Knotting the hair is probably the most time-consuming job, and some can take over 50 hours to do. The wig maker will slowly work their way across the head form, knotting the wig from the base. Hairs are knotted with the aid of a fine metal tool that will loop the hair through the netting. The hairline is then created using individual strands of hair due to the fact it is clearly visible.
